Can Aquamarine Get Wet?

Yes. Aquamarine is one of the more water-tolerant coloured gemstones. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale it is hard, and it is not porous, so hand-washing, rain and a splash cause no harm.

The cautions are real but few, and worth knowing so you are not needlessly careful with a genuinely durable stone.

Why aquamarine handles water well

Aquamarine is the blue variety of beryl, the same family as emerald. On paper the two are close relatives, but they behave very differently in water, and the difference is instructive.

Emerald is riddled with internal fractures and almost always oil- or resin-filled to hide them, which is why emerald hates water and heat. Aquamarine is typically much cleaner inside, with few or no fractures, and is rarely filled. That structural soundness is what makes it safe around water where its cousin is not.

So the general rule for beryl does not apply here. Aquamarine is the easy-going one.

The one real caution

Aquamarine can contain natural internal inclusions, and where it does, sudden temperature change is the thing to avoid.

Steam cleaners and ultrasonic cleaners are the usual culprits. Rapid heating can stress an included stone along its internal features. This is not a concern in daily wear or ordinary washing, only with mechanical cleaning equipment, so the rule is simply to keep it away from those.

Heat is also what gives most aquamarine its pure blue in the first place, through routine heat treatment. That colour is stable under normal conditions, but prolonged, intense heat is best avoided on principle.

The rules

Hand-washing, rain and a splash are all fine.

Showers and baths are fine occasionally, though soap film will gradually dull the polish, so it is better to take it off.

Swimming pools and hot tubs mean removing it, because chlorine attacks the setting.

No steam or ultrasonic cleaners, particularly if the stone has visible inclusions.

Perfume and lotion go on first, jewellery after.

How to clean aquamarine

Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush to reach behind the stone, then dry thoroughly. Aquamarine shows dirt more than darker stones because its colour is pale, so a film of hand cream mutes it noticeably and a quick clean brings it straight back.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower with aquamarine on?

Occasionally, without harm, since it is hard and not porous. Doing it daily means constant soap film on the stone and faster wear on the setting, so taking it off is better as a habit.

Can I wear aquamarine in the sea or a pool?

Rain and freshwater are fine, but avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs, where the chemicals damage metal settings over time. Salt water is best rinsed off afterwards.

Does water damage aquamarine's colour?

No. The colour comes from iron within the stone and is stable in water. What dulls an aquamarine is usually surface film from soap and lotion, which cleans off easily, not the water itself.

Why does my aquamarine look cloudy?

Almost always a film of hand cream, soap or skin oil on a pale stone, which mutes its colour more visibly than on a darker gem. A gentle clean restores it. Genuine internal cloudiness is a natural feature of some stones rather than damage.

Can aquamarine go in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Better not, especially if it has visible inclusions, which can be stressed by the vibration and heat. Clean it by hand with warm soapy water instead.
